Winner of Visions du Réel 2020 Audience Award!

There was surprise and delight on Sunday evening with the news that Sascha Schöberl, our 2018 Funding Award Winner won the Audience Award for Mirror, Mirror on the Wall at Visions du Réel!

As none of us could travel to Nyon for the ceremony, Sascha was sitting in his back garden at home when the news came through. It was touching that he thanked The Whickers in his vibrant and emotional acceptance speech, saying that without us “none of this would have been possible”.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall is a portrait of Dr Han, whose life has become a permanent quest for perfection. From the livestreamed operating theatre to art fairs via fashion shows, the famous Chinese plastic surgeon has only one aim: beauty. Through the implacable portrait of this character, the film questions beauty as a simultaneously essential yet vain element of society in the era of selfies.
