Announcing The Whickers Radio & Audio Award Finalists 2021
We are thrilled to announce our 2021 Radio & Audio Funding Award finalists!
Our submissions team were wowed by five amazing stories ranging from a daughter’s moving search for her mother’s last words, to a controversial investigation into Berlin’s most infamous paedophile clinic, to one woman’s distant yet vibrant memories of the mango tree lined streets of Congo. Take a look below for the full story of each project in the running to win our coveted annual Radio & Audio Funding Award (RAFA).
Jane Ray, Artistic Director of The Whickers, said of this year’s competition:
“We were amazed by the depth and variety of applications to this year’s RAFA Awards. From Ghana to Paraguay, Vietnam to Walthamstow, we have been kept delightfully on our toes by the wealth of ideas and stories. We’ve learnt about everything from Orchestral Journalism to Derealisation and heard whispered exchanges and sighs to break the heart. However all five finalists have vitality and originality, that special magic that makes you lean in and want more. I am very excited to explore these projects alongside our expert mentors and watch them flourish. Congratulations to Talia, Phoebe, Andrew, Lauren, and co-producers Bongani and Catherine, and thanks to all our esteemed applicants.”
Unlike in previous years, our RAFA finalists will not be pitching their projects for a chance to become this year’s winner. Instead, our finalists have already won £1,000 each and are invited to join our Audio Development Weekend Workshop. The workshops are designed to bring on the excellent projects even further, through sharing experiences and with the help of some of the best audio experts in the biz.
Following the workshops, our 2021 RAFA Winner will be selected by our esteemed panel of mentors and judges, and will take home an additional £4,000 plus £1,000 worth of professional mentorship to see their project through to completion.
Our winner will be announced publicly on or before Friday 22nd October 2021.
