ANNOUNCING OUR 2024 DURBAN FILMMART WINNER

We are delighted to have found our third annual Whicker DFM Bursary winner. After a vigorously competitive pitch at The Durban Filmmart and incisive one to one meetings with our Editorial Consultant, Jane Mote was proud to announce that this year’s winner of the £3,000 documentary film seed fund is the project We Had The Moon!

We Had The Moon! is a beautiful film which begins with a chance encounter with an elderly lady on a bus. This encounter leads our African filmmaker to start a journey of discovery that has lasted nearly 14 years. Her story unfolds with the help of creative and poetic tools that bring to life a time forgotten that has a powerful influence on the realities of today.

Due to the sensitive nature of the material we are unable to reveal the name of the director or further details of the project at this stage.  We feel, however, that this story is one of such urgency and importance that it must be told, and The Whickers are delighted to play a small part in its journey. 

Jane Mote, Editorial Consultant for The Whickers said “The Director’s access, honesty and creativity are woven through her story. We felt it was important to award this film the £3k bursary to help her complete her film so it can be seen”.
 
The Whickers continue to work with the huge and influential pan-African finance and co-production market, Durban Filmmart, to provide a bursary award to  a first-time, feature documentary maker from the African continent.  When selecting the projects at development stage, we look for one that tells an important story to which our mentoring and £3,000 can truly make a difference.
